Higgins Stuns O'Sullivan in Crucible Classic as Trump Crashes Out to Vafaei

Monday at the Crucible gave us everything. Two last-16 matches, both decided 13-12, both absolutely extraordinary — and by the end of play, Ronnie O'Sullivan's quest for a record-breaking eighth world title was over, and so was Judd Trump's. The Comeback Nobody Saw Coming
Let's start with the big one. John Higgins, staring down the barrel at 9-4 behind against a seven-time world champion who was cue-balling around the table like a man possessed, somehow found a way back. Six consecutive frames lost by O'Sullivan — only the fifth time in his entire Crucible career that's happened — and suddenly Higgins had clawed back to 9-7 overnight. When play resumed on Monday, the Scot took the first three frames of the session to level it at 10-10, and from that point on it was anybody's match.
O'Sullivan, to his enormous credit, refused to buckle. He won the 20th and 21st frames to edge back in front at 11-10, showing exactly why he remains the most naturally gifted player to ever pick up a cue. But Higgins, who has now contested more World Championship matches than almost any player of his generation, wasn't done. Back-to-back frames put him 12-11 up, only for O'Sullivan to land an 81 break and force a deciding frame — the 25th of the match.
In a decider that had the Crucible crowd on their feet, Higgins missed a red into the middle at 16-0 that looked like it might cost him everything. O'Sullivan, however, could only muster eight points and failed to pot a red himself. Higgins compiled a break of 49 to seal it. Both players received a standing ovation. Rightly so. This was, without question, one of the finest matches played across the 49-year history of the World Championship at the Crucible.
Higgins afterwards was generous and honest in equal measure: "I'm just delighted I came to the party in the third session, because the first two sessions, how I was only 9-7 behind, I'll never know." O'Sullivan, reflecting on two years without a major final, admitted the biggest matches operate at a different level — and that missing crucial balls at key moments was ultimately the difference.
Trump Eliminated by Qualifier Vafaei
If Higgins vs O'Sullivan was the romantic drama of the day, Trump vs Vafaei was the genuine shock. World number one Judd Trump — the man many punters had backed ante-post as the favourite to win the whole thing — was beaten 13-12 by Iranian qualifier Hossein Vafaei. This is not a player who was supposed to be in the quarter-finals. Vafaei came through qualifying just to reach the Crucible, and he's now into the last eight of the World Championship.
Trump's exit is enormous for the market. He arrived in Sheffield as one of the shortest-priced contenders and now he's watching the remainder of the tournament from home. That changes everything in terms of how you approach the remaining ante-post positions.

With both Trump and O'Sullivan gone in the same day, the path to the final has opened up considerably for the remaining contenders. Higgins, a four-time world champion who clearly has something left in the tank, must now be considered a serious live outsider at the very least. Vafaei's run is the sort of story the World Championship throws up every few years — a qualifier who gathers momentum and simply refuses to be intimidated by the occasion or the opponent. Keep an eye on his odds; they'll shorten quickly now that Trump's name is off the draw.
